Chairperson's 2026 Message

As we welcome 2026, I do so with a deep sense of optimism and quiet pride in the journey of the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra. While 2025 may not have been a year marked by competitions or awards, it was a year of substance — one that strengthened our musical foundation and reminded us that progress is not always measured by trophies, but by courage, commitment, and collective resolve.

The defining highlight of Season 2024/2025 was undoubtedly PPO’s performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, first presented in celebration of Texchem Group’s 50th anniversary and later reprised as part of our concert season. To bring this monumental work to life is no small feat for any orchestra. For PPO, it marked the completion of all nine Beethoven symphonies — a significant milestone in our history. I wish to record my sincere appreciation to Professor Chan Tze Law of YSTCM Singapore, who first mooted this bold idea for an amateur state orchestra. What once seemed ambitious has now become part of our lived musical experience.

I would also like to place on record my deep appreciation to Tan Sri Fumihiko Konishi, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Texchem Group, whose faith in PPO proved decisive. Beethoven’s Ninth is a mammoth undertaking, and for many years I hesitated, unsure whether our orchestra was ready for such a challenge. Tan Sri Konishi’s confidence in PPO — at a moment when I myself wavered — was both a generous encouragement and a powerful vote of trust. Leadership, as it turns out, occasionally requires a little steel in the spine and a willingness to trust those around us.

The success of this historic performance hinged greatly on the leadership of our resident conductor, Ng Choong Yen, who bore the immense responsibility of uniting orchestra and choir into a single artistic voice. Bringing together instrumentalists and singers for such a complex work was no small task, and the journey was, at times, delightfully nail-biting. My heartfelt thanks also go to our two choral directors — Tan Jin Yin, Artistic Director of the Penang Philharmonic Chamber Choir, and Mak Chi Hoe, Artistic Director of the Penang Philharmonic Chorus — whose tireless preparation and musical discipline enabled two distinct choral traditions to come together seamlessly for this monumental work.

None of our achievements would be possible without the steadfast support of our sponsors, donors, and patrons. Your belief in PPO allows us to continue delivering inclusive, high-quality musical experiences that enrich the cultural life of Penang. We are deeply grateful for your trust and generosity.

At the heart of PPO are our volunteer musicians and singers. Your commitment, discipline, and love for music are the soul of this orchestra. Week after week, you give your time and talent not for accolades, but for the shared joy of music-making — and for that, you have our sincere thanks.

As a state orchestra, PPO continues to hold a long-standing hope of one day having a permanent home befitting its role and growing artistic aspirations. With Dewan Sri Pinang about to undergo extensive renovations, suitable venues are understandably limited, and we remain appreciative of the continued support and understanding of the State as we navigate this transitional period. We look forward, in time, to possibilities that will allow PPO to serve audiences even more effectively and sustainably.

As we move into 2026, PPO does so with renewed energy and confidence. We remain committed to nurturing local talent, expanding our programmes, and deepening our connection with audiences. With unity of purpose and continued community support, we look ahead to a future that is both artistically ambitious and firmly rooted in service.

Last but not least, I extend my sincere thanks to the Penang State Government, my fellow members of the Board of Directors, and every member of the PPO family. Your dedication and belief continue to sustain this orchestra and affirm the enduring power of music to bring people together.

Together, we move forward — hopeful, harmonious, and inspired.

Best Regards,

Datin Seri Irene Yeap
