As a tenor in the Penang Philharmonic Chorus (PPC), I've had many memorable moments singing with my fellow choristers. But our recent concert series, Choral Bridges, held together with The Philharmonic Society of Selangor (The Phil), was something truly special. This wasn't just about performing, as it was also about learning new things, sharing experiences, and growing together. For PPC, it was also our very first concert outside of Penang, which made the experience even more meaningful.
Two Cities, One Purpose

Our collaboration began when The Phil traveled to Penang to perform with us. We welcomed them with warmth and joy, excited to share our stage with fellow music lovers. Just one week later, PPC went to Kuala Lumpur for a second performance which is our first-ever concert outside of our hometown. That trip felt like a big step forward, not just as singers, but as a choir finding its place in the wider music community in Malaysia.
The Phil was formed back in 1958, and PPC only started in 2019. Even though there's a big difference in age and experience, one thing remains the same—we all love music deeply. Singing together reminded me that music doesn't care how long a choir has existed. What truly matters is the passion behind each voice.
The Heart of PPC

Since PPC began, we've gone through many ups and downs. But what makes us strong is the people. As I always say, "Come for the music, stay for the people". Being a community choir means we're more than just a group that sings—we're a family. Although it is not always sunny days, we support each other, laugh together, and face challenges side by side. Through thick and thin, we stay connected. This concert was proof of that bond.
In Choral Bridges, it wasn't only about the music. It was about everyone who gave their time and energy to make the trip work. Many choristers used their own money, managed their own schedules, and showed deep commitment. That really touched me. It showed how much we care, and how much this choir means to each of us.
Lessons Beyond Music

Working with The Phil taught us a lot. We learned how they run their choir, how their members bond, and how their passion keeps everything moving. Watching their teamwork and hearing their stories opened my eyes. There's so much that goes on behind the scenes, from managing rehearsals to organizing a full concert. These lessons will stay with us as PPC continues to grow.
We also owe so much to our Artistic Director, Mak Chi Hoe. His leadership and guidance helped us through every step of the journey all this while. He was patient, steady, and encouraging. Without him, this concert series wouldn't have been possible; PPC wouldn't be what it is today.
More Than Just a Concert

Choral Bridges was the perfect name for this event. We didn't just perform songs. We built friendships, shared experiences, and created lasting memories. Whether in Penang or Kuala Lumpur, we felt like one big choir. Traveling together made our bonds stronger and gave us new ways to connect.
Music was the reason we came together, but people were the reason it mattered. After this experience, I feel even more thankful to be part of PPC. We sing, we learn, we grow—and through it all, we support each other.
